Worst Excuse for a Jazz Club in the Twin Cities

by RNCSUCKS

If there was one place in the Twin Cities to avoid its Rossi's Blue Star! While the steaks are great, they are extremely overpriced and served by some of the most repulsive arrogant waitstaff known to man, clearly a reflection of its management. Blue Star claims to be a jazz club but has insulted and angered nearly all of the Twin Cities finest jazz musicians and has treated veteran local musicians shoddy and disrespectful.

I attended a show at the Blue Star by jazz legend James Moody a few years ago and the tables closest to the stage were yelling and laughing while the 80 year old legend tried to perform, I was ashamed and couldn't believe I had paid such a high cover to hear a bunch of obnoxiously loud clueless people. The management allowed the disruptions to continue until I had to just leave.

Dont waste your time or money at this place, there are much better places to relax and listen to some of the finest jazz from around the world and from our vast local talent here in Minnesota.

  • Pros: with new management could be a great jazz venue
  • Cons: staff and management VERY arrogant

Poor quality food. Very expensive. Intrusive service.

by Gulpman

This subterranean restaurant disappointed us in many ways. The prices were high ($49 for the house special steak). The steaks arrived luke-warm, were fatty and gristly to the point of being almost inedible. The side dishes of vegetables were heavily salted and also arrived luke-warm. The "freshly made" apple pie was obviously just microwaved, with a soggy crust, and again was barely warm. The service was intrusive to the point of making it uncomfortable to carry on a conversation amongst the guests. There are many other much better, less expensive steak houses in the Twin Cities. I will not come here again.

  • Pros: Easy parking right next to the restaurant
  • Cons: Poor quality food. Overpriced. Intrusive service

Meat is Always Good

by sharingexperiences

The pork is the best. I've tried lots of places. Both expensive and cheap but no one comes close to Rossi's. I've decided not to try anymore places because I have been disappointed so many times. Rossi's kitchen staff knows how to cook it just perfect so that it is not overcook but thick and juicy. The serving size is the same as dinner's so go during happy hour for a great deal.

Overpriced, bad service, surprise charges

by hydrocrest

The atmosphere is very nice. The music is good, and it's quiet enough that you can talk to the other people at your table. The service unfortunately was not good. Our server only came twice in the two hours we were there, and we were told we would have to pay a cover charge past a certain time, so we asked for our check and she mysteriously didn't come back until long after that time, so we were charged as a large group for the cover charge. When we spoke to the manager about it, the charge was removed but he was very combative and rude. Not impressed. The food is okay, but not worth the money. There are better ways to spend your money and your even more precious time.

  • Pros: atmosphere, acoustics
  • Cons: service, cost, management

HORRIBLE SERVICE, no, really awful

by griswoct

They have good appetizers and food, but the Happy Hour staff is the worst of all in Minneapolis. I've gone there a couple of times because of co-workers, but would never pick to go there. We were yelled at by one server once, they REFUSE to split bills, and mixed up our order 3 times wrong in one night. Wow. pathetic for an establishment that makes their wait staff dress in all white Chef's uniforms and aprons. The food is well priced and tastes good though, but don't tip for the service!

Nice, quaint venue, good food, ambience to boot!

by rebmilsch

We were at Ninth & Nicollet to go to The Melting P*t, however they were unable to accomodate us (it was an hour and a half wait), so we walked next door to the Blue Star Room. Having never been there, we didn't know what to expect, but they were able to seat us right away. There was a $5 cover added to our bill for the evening's jazz entertainment, which wasn't a big deal once the band started - the live entertainment was appropriate and added ambience! My bf ordered the Ribeye, I the sirloin and crab cake. Dinner was good - nothing over the top outstanding (for steak, we typically frequent Morton's), but very good food, cooked to order, and great service. This place is reminicent of the Minneapolis Cafe (which I don't think exists anymore...) - fun, live entertainment, professional service, and good food. Dinner for two included our steaks, two sides ala carte, soup for him, salad for me, and drinks - and came to just over $170.00, including tip and the cover charge(s). Not bad!

  • Pros: Live music, good food, good service
  • Cons: Smaller dining room/dining area

romantic atmosphere

by mbminnetonka

My husband and I enjoyed a lovely evening at Rossi's the other evening. The jazz was easy on the ears and the cosmos were not ridiculously priced. The view of the stage is good and the sound level is not ear shattering. I would recommend this venue for a nice evening on the town with your significant other or having a ladies night out. Not a pick-up place.

  • Pros: ability to have conversation while enjoying nice jazz
  • Cons: bathrooms

Bad management,

by mmj111

We had a group of co-workers to Rossi's and made a reservation days in advance. Not everyone showed up at the exact same time but within a matter of half an hour everyone was there. I spent that entire time arguing with Jay the manager, because he kept trying to give our table away. He is arrogant, mean and his entire staff hates his guts as much as his customers do. Terrible customer service and management skills. I will not return because of him alone. Our waiter was miserable having to work for Jay but he was attentive and nice.

The ambiance and food were good though but totally not worth the hassle, if I owned Rossi's I would be embarassed to have someone like that interacting with my customers. Dont order the fried mozzerella, its a slab of fried cheese, not mozzerella sticks, weird.

  • Pros: good drink specials, ambiance, food
  • Cons: horrible management, it ruined the evening, terrible for a group
