You just feel comfortable at the Square!
by sbcarnes
Not sure what the person who gave it one star is looking for in a restaurant, but I couldn't disagree more! The Square is a feel good place with great food and fun people, located in a wonderful town that you just want to stroll around in. The fireplace is awesome!! We go regularly and always have a great time. It's the kind of place where it's very easy to strike up a fun conversation with others at the bar. For vegetarians, there are many very nice options - not just the obligatory salad or pasta. At the risk of identifying myself to one of the bartenders.....phenomenal Long Island Iced Teas too!!!
- Pros: Fun people, great food, and a place you just feel comforatble being in
- Cons: It's small, so it can get very crowded
They wish they were still hip

If you are over the age of 80, you will like this place... if not, leave the drunken COUGARS and CREEPERS alone there!! My Grandparents would like it, maybe.
- Pros: To cool to actually serve you
- Cons: It is still in business
Great food!

I have been going to Washington Square for a number of years and have always had great food! The breakfast is continually wonderful - definitely the best in town. Yes, the services isn't always top-notch, but the food and ambiance makes up for it.
- Pros: Food, good drinks, good ambiance
- Cons: the service can be rough
Great ambience, but it stops there.

We have been to Washington Sqaure a handfull of times and each time the experience gets worse. The service has always been mediocre, but the last time we went it was so bad it was laughable. We went there for breakfast the last dining experience. From the start our server seemed hurried, a little rough around the edges and unattentive. My mom wanted a skillet with the eggs on the side. The server just couldn't get this. She said, "I can do the hollandaise sauce on the side, but not the eggs." We had a confusing discussion about this matter and when she left the table we still weren't sure what my Mom was going to get. Sure enough, when the meal came out 35 minutes later the hollandaise sauce was on the side, but the eggs were sitting right on top of the hashbrowns. We all stared at it baffled, including our server. She immediatley said, "I am taking this back." At this time my Mom refused, she was hungry. We just couldn't understand why the eggs couldn't be put on the side from the beginning. To top it all off the food was forgettable. We have wanted to really like Washingtion Square, it has so much potential. If you are looking for a great ambience, food and service head on down to 'Ingredients.' FYI: More than half of the people at our table came from restaurant management and service.
Very Nice

I am surprised this place doesn't get more props for the Best Burgers in the Twin Cities. Better than Fuddruckers, Lions Tap, or Matt's Bar. Very Nicely seasoned burger-well-cooked but not chaired still juicy on a fresh-baked bun combined with very good fries. A nice variety of food. Good Service. One of the best casual dining experiences in the Twin Cities. Check it Out!!!!!!
- Pros: Terrific Food, Very Good Service
- Cons: Excessive Smoke
Excellent Service & Selection

In going to the Square would always be a good choice, this even though one of the reviews from a previous visitor stated that the patio furniture was cheep. But oh, things have changed. They have spent money to change them out to make the patio I feel the best in the area & versatile for 3 seasons.
The service is still one of the best in town, & the beer selection is still as always has been, a great selection of your favorite that can not always be found at many bars, as well as things worth trying. The food, though not of an extravagant affair, is what you would expect from a bar & grill. Their home made pizza is outstanding & their hamburgers they pride themselves on.
- Pros: Good parking, Large beer selection, Great service
Best Spot in White Bear Lake

The excellent selection of tap beers, the friendly servers and bartenders, the trendy atmosphere and the wonderful food keep me coming back to "The Wash". The decor rivals most places downtown, but the patrons here are much friendlier than most down towners. The patio is spacious and well maintained. A wood burning fireplace in the bar provides considerable ambience during the colder months.
There is an eclectic blend of live music on Tuesday and Thursday nights. The naughty buffalo wings pack just the right amount of zing, espcially when washed down with a pint of Bell's beer. A bloody mary (made from their own infused vodka) and a spinach omlette on a Saturday morning can't be beat. You won't be disappointed
- Pros: Atmosphere, Service, Food Quality
Nice patio, average eats

This is a nice looking place in downtown WBL. The highlights are the nice patio, a good selection of micro's on draft (Bell's seasonal, Redhook seasonal, Big Sky Brewing, etc...), a split room/bar with non-smoking on one side and smoking on the other.
The food is average in both cost and quality. I had the Hawaiian Chicken sandwich (~8.50), which had a nice grilled aroma but little taste. A pint of seasonal Bells beer was $4.50, quite high but also better than paying to much $$$ for budmillercoors. They also have a punch card, buy 10 beers get one free.
While we sat for a while before being served, service was prompt once we got started.
Much of the patio furniture is the cheap resin/plastic you can get at Walmart. Otherwise the patio was nice and the surroundings quite.
We visited on a warm evening and had a nice dinner.
- Pros: patio, beer selection, good parking
- Cons: overpriced beer, average food
well done

Lunch on the outside patio, under the umbrellas, is a good way to spend some time. The servers are attentive, and the food is properly prepared.
The burgers were done exactly as ordered, and the topping ingredients were all fresh.
The servers do an excellent job of keeping you happy.
This restaurant is in White Bear Lake, not St. Paul, as the address suggests.
- Pros: food quality, service, easy parking
- Cons: drink prices
Our weekly hang-out.

We LOVE this place. All of the bartenders and servers are awesome, and the service and food is great. In the fall you can sit out on the patio under the standing portable heaters, and there's a cozy fireplace inside that creates great ambience in the winter.
They just added a Mexican portion to their menu, and the new items are spectacular! :-)
You MUST give Washington Square a try!
