Nice place - slovenly, overly-casual wait staff

by Ric Deed at Citysearch

I'm a longtime WBL local, have been to Washington Grill quite a few times. The one big issue - when bringing guests here for first time I often have to cringe at the slovenly dressed wait staff. The Wash Grill is a classy enough place, nice architecture, why the waiter dude feels it OK to wear a grossly filthy stained thin white T-shirt, dirty baggy jeans and a mangey unkept beard really dumbs down the otherwise pleasant ambiance. It's actually kind of gross being served from someone that looks like they sleep under a park bench and a bad reflection on the whole establishment (If that's what the waiter looks like one wonders what the kitchen looks like?!) The owner needs get it together and tell the wait staff to exercise some basic hygiene and wear some decent (or at least cleaner!) clothes.

Historic White Bear

by GreenEyeGrayBird at Citysearch

It's a bar...and a nice one. They have some nice folks that work there and a fireplace which is cool to look at. It is more for folks who are 40 and up I'd guess. I'm 28 and I really do not see many people my age there, unless they work there...Furthermore.... If I were a guy, I would hate to have an upset stomach there...shitty latch on door so anyone could walk in on you...why is it okay to have a lock on girls door but not on guys??? It is 2010!

  • Pros: Big Nice Girls Bathroom :)
  • Cons: No Latch On The Door For Mens Bathroom :(

Bad versions of competitors menu items!!

by Jimmyboyburroughs at Citysearch

Waited fifteen minutes to be greeted, no one at the door, no manager visible and my daughter and I were treated as though it was our "lucky day" to be there!! After finding our own table next to the un-showered Hippies, it took another fifteen minutes for our beverages to arrive... they were prompt in delivering our food which only took about 4 or 5 minutes, not long enough to cook anything fresh in a busy bar!!?? The food wasn't anything you couldn't find at the "OCB" or "Acapulco" for a fraction of the price. We felt as though we might be paying for the self-indulgent crap on the walls?? This would not fly in Luverne, Texas!!

  • Pros: Ahhhh.... Ummmmm....
  • Cons: I think the staff is made up of ex-Cons

You just feel comfortable at the Square!

by sbcarnes at Citysearch

Not sure what the person who gave it one star is looking for in a restaurant, but I couldn't disagree more! The Square is a feel good place with great food and fun people, located in a wonderful town that you just want to stroll around in. The fireplace is awesome!! We go regularly and always have a great time. It's the kind of place where it's very easy to strike up a fun conversation with others at the bar. For vegetarians, there are many very nice options - not just the obligatory salad or pasta. At the risk of identifying myself to one of the bartenders.....phenomenal Long Island Iced Teas too!!!

  • Pros: Fun people, great food, and a place you just feel comforatble being in
  • Cons: It's small, so it can get very crowded

They wish they were still hip

by procritic123 at Citysearch

If you are over the age of 80, you will like this place... if not, leave the drunken COUGARS and CREEPERS alone there!! My Grandparents would like it, maybe.

  • Pros: To cool to actually serve you
  • Cons: It is still in business

by elizparkk at Citysearch

I have been going to Washington Square for a number of years and have always had great food! The breakfast is continually wonderful - definitely the best in town. Yes, the services isn't always top-notch, but the food and ambiance makes up for it.

  • Pros: Food, good drinks, good ambiance
  • Cons: the service can be rough

Great ambience, but it stops there.

by juliajane79 at Citysearch

We have been to Washington Sqaure a handfull of times and each time the experience gets worse. The service has always been mediocre, but the last time we went it was so bad it was laughable. We went there for breakfast the last dining experience. From the start our server seemed hurried, a little rough around the edges and unattentive. My mom wanted a skillet with the eggs on the side. The server just couldn't get this. She said, "I can do the hollandaise sauce on the side, but not the eggs." We had a confusing discussion about this matter and when she left the table we still weren't sure what my Mom was going to get. Sure enough, when the meal came out 35 minutes later the hollandaise sauce was on the side, but the eggs were sitting right on top of the hashbrowns. We all stared at it baffled, including our server. She immediatley said, "I am taking this back." At this time my Mom refused, she was hungry. We just couldn't understand why the eggs couldn't be put on the side from the beginning. To top it all off the food was forgettable. We have wanted to really like Washingtion Square, it has so much potential. If you are looking for a great ambience, food and service head on down to 'Ingredients.' FYI: More than half of the people at our table came from restaurant management and service.

Very Nice

by josecordoba at Citysearch

I am surprised this place doesn't get more props for the Best Burgers in the Twin Cities. Better than Fuddruckers, Lions Tap, or Matt's Bar. Very Nicely seasoned burger-well-cooked but not chaired still juicy on a fresh-baked bun combined with very good fries. A nice variety of food. Good Service. One of the best casual dining experiences in the Twin Cities. Check it Out!!!!!!

  • Pros: Terrific Food, Very Good Service
  • Cons: Excessive Smoke

Excellent Service & Selection

by kltyler at Citysearch

In going to the Square would always be a good choice, this even though one of the reviews from a previous visitor stated that the patio furniture was cheep. But oh, things have changed. They have spent money to change them out to make the patio I feel the best in the area & versatile for 3 seasons.

The service is still one of the best in town, & the beer selection is still as always has been, a great selection of your favorite that can not always be found at many bars, as well as things worth trying. The food, though not of an extravagant affair, is what you would expect from a bar & grill. Their home made pizza is outstanding & their hamburgers they pride themselves on.

  • Pros: Good parking, Large beer selection, Great service
