Mediocre food, weak drinks, worse service

by simulacrum25

This used to be one of my favorite restaurants years ago, but the last two times I've gone the food has been mediocre, and recently my friend and I both commented that their margaritas were weak. A disappointment considering it has such potential.

  • Pros: Great potential, nice decor
  • Cons: Weak drinks, terrible service

Woudn't go back at gunpoint!

by tlyberg

Ok, when we arrived, the place was hopping. The hostess greeted us warmly and on our way to the table, said "You're in luck, the Mariachi band is just starting!"

Who doesn't love Mariachi? We were happily seated near the wedding reception and the guests of which were eating delicioso mucho! Since we were seated with only the drink/app menu, we waited (too long) for a server to deliver the actual menu. Ricardo took our drink order (a beer and a rocks margarita. Beer arrived fine, margarita arrived blended - then promptly returned to sender for the aforementioned rocks) Chips and salsa.... cold, saltless chips, watery, flavorless (not a single chunk of tomato or onion) salsa. We then asked if we could get a "hotter" salsa, and were graced with THE SAME SALSA plus tabasco sauce. Also ordered the guacamole. Joke, right? Mashed avacado with topped with tomato. Ugh, gross... though we made the best of it and mixed the "hot" salsa and guacamole to make it remotely edible.

Then dinner arrived. I ordered a chicken chile relleno - blah, and beef and cheese tostada. blah... Husband ordered a "spicy" beef and cheese chimichanga. double blah... what is their idea of spicy? Gross...

When Ricardo returned to see two full plates and a couple of very unhappy diners, he asked "How are you doing" we relied "Well, it's not what we were expecting" Ricardo: "You don't like it"? Us: "It's just not good!" Ricardo: " Do you want a box?" HUH?????

No, we don't want a box.... I wouldn't feed my dog the leftovers.... this is is just plain gross....

Please, don't bring your friends here.... head to Mi Casita's in Scandia or Don Julio's in Forest Lake. These two places actually have well seasoned and delicious food, pleasant service and great prices.... skip the big names and FIND A FAMILY RUN CUCINA!!

  • Pros: The Mariachi band knew "the Macarena"
  • Cons: EVERYTHING ELSE!

Great Food, Better Staff

by twopointslow

I had read some reviews on sites like this one that had mixed opinions about the food taste and wait staff attentiveness, but being as we were in the mood for mexican food, we decided to try for ourselves.

I took my girlfriend out on a friday night (around 8pm) and there was no wait...probably because the place was so big. We chose to sit in a lounge area surrounding the bar because it had a restaurant feel but also plenty of large tvs for me to watch the game. Our waiter (I think Shawn was his name) greeted us immediately and explained in great detail the vast margarita menu. My girlfriend and I both ordered patron margaritas of the month as recommended by our server and they were large, cold, and fantastic! We then proceeded to order off of the large menu featuring a pretty standard collection of mexican entre's. I chose the chicken chimichanga, and my girlfriend chose the taco salad with beef. The food was delicious! the plate was large and complimented by rice and beans for me, and my girlfriend was very satisfied with he salad (though we recomend using the salsa as a dressing). As far as mexican restaurants go, this is one of the better ones I've been too.

And as far as the waitstaff is concerned, our waiter Shawn was one of the most attentive and helpful waiters I have ever had. Now I know this could have been a fluke experience, or we may have gotten lucky in the rotation of waiters buzzing about, but we were very pleased with our service and will be requesting the same waiter when we visit again very soon!

Thank you Ol' Mexico!

  • Pros: Large, immediate seating, attentive waiter, great margaritas!
  • Cons: none so far!

Mediocre food, waiter disappeared

by OperDZ

Tried it 3 times. Bland food. Margaritas are huge to hid fact they are weak. Last time I specifically mentioned we were in a hurry, ordered immediately, got food, and we never saw our waiter again. I had to walk around to find someone to pay. Other patrons were lined up in the lobby trying to find someone to pay so they could leave. The waitstaff just disappeared!

  • Pros: Large
  • Cons: Bland Mexican food, waiter vanished

Great Service, Great Mexican Food, Tons of Seating

by kretz330

If you're looking for a casual dining experience with excellent food, this is the place. The food was some of the best Mexican food I've had in quite a while. We went on a Friday Night and didn't have to wait to be seated due in large part to their large dining area. The service was great, the restaurant was clean, and the meal was resonably priced. (about $8-$15 a plate) The only thing I would advise is piecing together your meal as opposed to ordering the prearranged, "numbered" meals. You can get the same exact meal for cheaper this way.

  • Pros: Great food, clean environment, Great Service
  • Cons: Drinks are high priced

Great food and great service

by rauv

We've been frequenting Ol' Mexico for years, and the hot salsa and margaritas are wonderful! Service has always been great. Management is kind of full of themselves, but the food is always hot, drinks are always cold, and we always go back. I've lived in the Southwest for most of my life, and Ol' Mexico's food challenges many of the Mexican restaurants down there. Love it! Recommend it!

  • Pros: Food, drinks, service
  • Cons: Stuck up management

Worst example of Mexican food

by djgal

I used to live in the Roseville area for many years and always enjoyed the food at Ol Mexico immensly. We moved out of the area a few years ago but this weekend we were back visiting friends and decided to go to Ol Mexico for dinner. What a disappointment! I ordered a numero uno which is a taco and a cheese enchilada and my husband orded a taco salad. Neither dish had much flavor. Not only had the price increased dramatically, but the quality of the food was terrible. It tasted like bar b que sauce! The meal used to come with rice and beans but now it is a choice of either or. Even my husband who never complains about anything said his taco salad was the worst he ever had. I took a taste of it and had to agree that in nobody's imagination did it taste anything like a taco salad. I am sad to say that we will never go back there again. The one thing I will say in defense of the restaurant is that they did take $5 off the bill when we voiced our disappointment in the quality of the food. Even with that I will have to say the Ol Mexico I used to love so much is evidently a thing of the past.

  • Pros: No waiting
  • Cons: Terrible food

horrible food

by rezinald

The drinks at Ol Mexico were very good, but that is where it ends. This place was quite possibly the worst meal I have ever eaten. 1st-the guacamole had a brown tint, which indicates that it was sitting out. We attempted to get past the brown tint to find out that it was an avocado cream, there were no spices in it at all. The salsa tasted like it was really watered down store bought salsa--awful. I had the fajitas, which included the brown tinted guacamole. The only saving point with the fajitas was the inclusion of pico where there was an actual leaf of cilantro and a jalapeno bits, I was at least able to taste some mexican spice. My husband got the tostada and a taco, both of which included ground beef that had NO seasoning. It was horrible, we would have got more authentic Mexican food if I had gone to Taco Bell.

Do not eat here, unless you want to pay a lot of money for bad food. It reminded us of the show Kitchen Nightmares with Gordon Ramsey.

  • Pros: drinks, service
  • Cons: FOOD!! all of it.
