customer service stinks! it's crappy, frustrating and makes you not want to rent there, a lot of movies skip and they don't belive it when it happens on your system and not theirs. they always act like they are doing you a favor by taking your money. those dogs r not well trained. they make the place stink. the guy who helps you with a mouth full of tobacco is just nasty. take that stuff out of your mouth before you talk to customers. they do have a lot of hard to find titles plus a lot of vhs titles, but it does'nt make up for the very very very poor customer service. if you can handle crappy service go ahead and go 4 4 5 can't beat it.
- Pros: titles price
- Cons: customer service customer service customer service customer service

They have the BIGGEST selection in the twin cities and the prices are the best!! I love that I can spend 5 bucks and get 4 great movies!! I love the staff and the owner is hilarious and has the cutest dog I’ve ever seen!!! I hope they never go outta business - like most of the other independent video stores in the area.

The Banality of Evil

Nicollet Village Video's staff isn't even that bad--most are just kind of bored and listless, providing the sort of flat customer service one expects at a video store. The owner is very gregarious and loves to bs about movies.
But then there's that one guy--you must know the one--the ponce.
He's there all the time, and I've come to feel that his attitude toward customers extends far beyond the boundaries of mere boredom or annoyance, and into the seething fires of absolute hatred. Even the simplest transaction with him is a study in pathological passive aggression, and god forbid you have some kind of issue or ask a question about a movie.
Avoid the ponce and you're golden.
- Pros: Good selection
- Cons: That one guy--the ponce.
Welcome to the jungle...

Surly, unsocialized staff lack rudimentary customer service skills.
Many badly scratched and unplayable DVDs.
Huge cult and foreign film selection.
Reminiscent of Uptowns Discount Video in its heyday during the 90s but lacks it's eccentric charm.
- Pros: Titles you wont find anywhere else; large adult section.
- Cons: Impolite staff; iffy quality of media.
It's Like Being Urinated On Every Time You Rent!

Sure Nicollet Village Video is cheap. And sure they have an astonishingly large and varied DVD selection. But there are two big problems: the Dog Guy and Smitty.
The Dog Guy keeps his pet rottweillers behind the counter. Actually the dogs are just fine. In fact they could teach their owner some courtesy. I've never heard a worker yell at a customer before.
Smitty is the other jerk. He's also rude but adds a coating of pointless smugness to his bad manners. Although he's clearly little more than an uneducated lout, he wishes to give customers the impression that he's very cool hombre indeed. Nonsense. He's simply a prematurely-balding, overweight loudmouth from some hick town. He thinks it's sophisticated to be impolite and unfriendly.
So prepare to check your dignity at the door along with your bag. I guarantee that the staff will berate you if you at least try to bring in the latter.
- Pros: Great selection, great prices
- Cons: Rude staff
The WORST service ever!
by keviefriend at Citysearch
I've been going here for years, and I've never gotten a greeting or a thank you.
My partner and I and a couple friends were there over the weekend, and they were kicking everyone out 15 minutes early because their clock was fast (no doubt so they could close early).
They were extremely rude to us, and even more rude to another customer who actually pointed out that the clock was 20 minutes fast (clock said 24:05 when it was really 23:45).
The clerk who rang us up did say thank you when handed the money, but not at any other time.
I really think that if these people don't want to provide decent service, they should close up and go back where they came from. We won't be back, ever.
I'm going to check out Crown Video, and a couple others I found on citysearch, see if they're any better.
- Pros: near uptown
- Cons: Been mugged on that street, car's been broken into in that lot, bad service, discs never play right, etc
Great selection!!

I just read thru all the previous reviews of Nicollet Video, some going back 5 years and I totally disagree with the cons mentioned. It was my first time there and I was blown away by the awesome selection and number of vids/cds available. It was like a candy store of videos. I found the man who waited on me to be very friendly and helpful. I must admit that the 2 rotties behind the counter did make me step back a bit when I first saw them, but fell in love with them when one put his paws up on the counter and wanted a scratch. I will definitely be back!!!
- Pros: Huge selection, great prices, friendly rotties and service
- Cons: Location
Wonderful all around

I've been renting from Nicollet Village for almost 6 years now and have NEVER had a bad experience. The staff may be a little crabby at times, but I'm crabby ALL the time (mostly at people that complain about Nicollet Village) so we all get along very well. I have rented a couple DVD's that did not play in my DVD player, but they replaced them with no hassle because I am not a demanding customer who always thinks I am right. I always find what I am looking for in there. Whether it's Japanese Horror/Torture movies, or "Relations" and the City. As far as the drop box goes.....makes perfect sense to me why they do not allow it's usage during business hours. Because it's a pain in the "rear end" to have to clean those things out every 5 minutes, and it's the lazy american's excuse to not get out of their cars. It is quite possible, as well, that it could be for security purposes. You know, DVD's are expensive, and 16th and Nicollet isn't the best neighborhood around.
Anyways, kudos to you Nicollet Village Video! Keep up the crabby attitude and great selection! Makes me feel more human.
- Pros: Great selection, 4 for 5, great selection, great selection.
- Cons: No licorice.
Oh Village Video, why can't you just stop sucking?

Village Video is so tempting; it's nearby, indi, and at first glance, the selection and rental prices look fantastic. As other reviewers have already said, though, VV falls short in a big way. Their discs are often in poor condition- scratched or overplayed. Their files on members are disorganized and inaccurate, and the staff live up to their reputation as the worst service in Minneapolis. The fact that they disallow drop box use during daytime hours is inconvenient, and they're notorious for towing their own customers from the lot!
It's sort of shocking that they still have a customer base, but I'm as guilty as all the other Whittier kids who'd rather get a defective rental, ridiculous fees, and horrible service than give our business to Blockbuster.
If you can avoid village video, though, do. Save yourself the frustration, and save the poor, imposed upon staff from your expectations of decent service, a disc that plays correctly, or fair fees.
- Pros: right in the neighborhood, 4 for $5 sounds good, surly staff are usually hot
- Cons: enthusiastic towing of customers from lot, poor service, deffective DVDs, lots of fees
The best there is...

Seriously.
Don't believe the morons here. They're just those type of people who believe that every poor schmoe with a counter job has to be their automatic best friend/slave/ass kissing syncophant and that they should be extrememly thankful for the chance. And then when they go into a business and that doesn't happen, they get all upset. Hey, guess what, losers, you aren't the center of the World and no one likes you. Go get real friends.... oh thats right, you're lame, so you can't...
I go there all the time and have yet to have a single problem. They've always answered every question I've had and make great recommendations. Maybe its just me, maybe I'm just not some creepy loser or maybe the secret is that I don't expect the kid with the tattoos behind the counter to fall on his knees and thank me for deeming him worthy enough to receive my $5. Maybe thats the secret... maybe you should realize that no one is paid to be your best friend, so just go there, shop and go home. Freaks!
Have you seen High Fidelity? Thats what this place is like, times 10! As in: Posers need not apply!
This video store has EVERYTHING I have looked for. EVERYTHING. Its awesome, you can't get a better deal anywhere in town or a more knowledgable staff. DVD and VHS, four movies for five dollars for four days. Thats sick! I can rent Disc 1 season 3 of Buffy, Full Metal Jacket, The Enigma of Kasper Hauer AND Battle Royale all at the same time! Awesome! The TV and music sections are amazing, so is the Criterion.
Love the dogs!
Conan rocks!
Best Video Store in town.... hands down!
- Pros: Insane selection, great prices, no fake b.s.
- Cons: no candy or soda for sale
