Some of the most memorable works in the Walker Art Center's collection sit on the grass of this free urban garden.

by Contributor

In Short
More than 40 pieces, both serious and whimsical, occupy 11 acres and are a must-see. The garden's most famous piece, "Spoonbridge and Cherry," has become one of Minneapolis' weirdest landmarks. Sandstone blocks sit amid the grass; giant iron sculptures cast shadows and a labyrinth invites visitors to walk among its walls of hedge and steel. People can truly experience the art--by walking inside it, touching it and getting up close--without those pesky museum guards.

Dining of the Queens

by citychica913

Anually, each April and May, the sculpture garden is infested by a plethora of young beauties. Photographers, families, young women in elegant dresses, strapping boys decked out in their tuxes. Limos, flowers, blue skyings, and an ambiance one wont forget. That is the scene of the sculpture garden come prom time of every year. It has become one of the most popular destinations for prom pictures, and after visiting, you wont wonder why. For those young, and old, art appreciaters, or just those seeking a stroll, the Sculpture garden is the place to be.

  • Pros: beautiful & relaxing, free, great location
  • Cons: parking (sometimes), weather dependent

playful and romantic

by sunshine23

The Sculpture Gardens is one of my favorite places to go. At night it's interesting to see how everything looks different. Plus at night it's easier to find free parking on the street. What I like most about it is the playfulness-enjoy a ride on the swing, play tag between the colums, and more fun stuff.

  • Pros: absolutely free, fun

Kid's Katch for 10 and under!

by bpeick

Do you have kids? If you are trying to find educational, fun and free activities for the 10 and under crowd, try the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden.

In the atrium at the Sculpture Garden, they have a Kid's map that has pictures of the sculptures, as well as some explanations of the works. My 5 year old took charge of the map and quickly had us off and running to each sculpture she found on the map. She called it a treasure hunt.

  • Pros: free Thursday- Walker, The bridge, Loring Park nearby
  • Cons: expensive parking, not much food avail., no Walker kid's stuff

romantic and unique

by bingsy

The Sculpture Gardens are one of the many things that make Minneapolis special. I go there often. Sometimes I go in the evening when it is almost too dark to see anything, and it is still a very wonderful experience. In fact, I prefer to go in the evening...or when it is sprinkling and wet, because you will often have the whole place to yourself. There is just something about feeling small in a large place, with hidden and tucked away places. End your visit with a walk across the lighted, flower path way and take yourself over the walking bridge (not the spoon bridge...hehe)to the Loring for a drink or appetizer

  • Pros: good aura, walk from Loring, romantic
