Irish blues bar on a street lined with divvy bars is a welcome addition and a friendly place to hoist a pint of Guinness.

by Molly Priesmeyer

In Short
Located in the spot where the Poodle Club wagged its tail for years, McMahon's bills itself as the world's first Irish blues bar. While we can't confirm this fact, we can vouch for the fact that McMahon's serves up Irish dishes and live blues o' plenty. In fact, the extensive menu might offer too many choices instead of focusing on the specialties (a generous portion of homemade Irish stew in a delicious bread bowl, for one), which could be plum perfect with the right amount of attention. The Poodle has (thankfully) been remade to include big booths and tables and darkened Irish charm.

Cheap female bartenders

by veryscaree

I liked the Poodle's food and atmosphere before it changed owners. Now the food is awful, and the help is obnoxious. Some of the new female bartenders seemed to act a little too familiar to the men, the last time I was there. I guess they really need a tip or something! We used to even bring our daughter in for lunch and a shirley temple on a Saturday afternoon, but I wouldn't anymore.

Nice Stage, Too Many "Thugs"

by vuduchyle

Nice place, IF they just get RID of the THUGS now hanging out there, and IF they get a decent band for such an awesome venue. Used-to-be solid-music.

  • Pros: Great Stage, 50's ambiance, Good Food
  • Cons: THUG CENTRAL

Upcoming HOT SPOT

by breadwinners_ent

The Poodle Club is an upcoming hot spot for locals. Sam and his crew have teamed up with BreadWinners Entertainment(BWE) to bring a urban flair to live entertainment . The live entertainment will provide a fresh atomosphere to regulars, while attracting a new crowd of live music lovers. Check out the Poodle Club over the next few months, guaranteed to be your new spot!

Large dive bar on a street lined with similar venues serves up heavy drinks and breakfast.

by Contributor

In Short
The Poodle Club has music, usually with no cover charge. Poodle patrons run the generational gamut, but all of them are smoking. The younger ones tend to be friends of the band. Like many a dive, the menu is sturdy, featuring mostly pub grub. If using hair of the dog to wash down the eggs and pancakes at breakfast is comforting, then the Poodle will whip something up for you quite cheaply--especially the bloody mary with its own pickled green beans.

I do recommend the "pub grub".

by honorharrington

It's a great deal for the price, same goes for the drinks. Meal specials are good. Fun bands, low key atmosphere, outdoor seating in warm weather for die-hard smokers. Karaoke is still on Wednesdays, although run now by a new DJ. Not sure how that is yet, but in the past the karaoke and singers was top notch. You could catch a few singers from regularly performing bands trying out different songs in the past.

  • Pros: Inexpensive, good food, good drinks

Poodle Club is a great dive

by dritt

Greate place to relax, watch people, participate in pull tabs, play pool, watch TV. Older family is OK. Smoke is expected.

Could become a great Uof M hangout when the word gets out.

Royal, the bartender, is notoriously engaging. You must go there to learn what that means for you.

We will be back soon.

  • Pros: Drinks, Eclectic fans, Relaxing
  • Cons: You must like dives, Smoky, Food is OK
