by supermaya
a hot summer night, got to Matts bar with my girl Jordan.
its a neighborhood bar, and we didnt know anybody, people looked at us like we are from the moon (cuz we are so pretty, but thats fine). the bartender was lame, and try to get my number, no thanks!
we had the Jucy lucy burger and fries, not bad.
but, after all, cheap beer, and my best friend, its all i need!!!
- Pros: cool beer:)
- Cons: non friendly people
Awesome Jucy Lucy's!
by nenechan
Go there for the Jucy Lucy's! Two thin patties stuffed with American cheese fried on a never-been-washed flattop grill. Your choice of grilled or raw onions, no other veggies (lettuce tomatoes etc) available. What can be simpler? Wait staff is friendly, but don't forget, you're in a neighborhood bar so don't give 'em any guff and you won't git none. It's hard to get more Minneapolis than this!
- Pros: dive bar awesomeness
- Cons: gets very busy
The real deal!

Not a wing joint but a magical delight known as the 'jucy lucy'. You have to experience it. Cheese, meat, cheese - beautiful.
- Pros: Jucy lucy & great fries - COLD beer
- Cons: no wing equivalent

My grandfather took my mom and her two sisters to MATT'S back in the 50's he drank LEINENKUGEL'S, they had JUICY LUCY burgers and shakes. I just went for the first time, great staff very nice as well as efficient. The place was packed, because of the great food, after a short wait my mom and I got seats at the bar. I had a LEINENKUGEL'S and a JUICY LUCY the place couldn't have been better.
- Pros: the burgers can't be beat
- Cons: not one in SEATTLE
Whiners...stay at home

You don't go to Matt's for the kind and sympathetic wait staff who have time to wash their hands every 20 seconds.
You go to Matt's (it's a bar, remember) for beer and inexpensive, but great, burgers. And Matt's delivers! The Jucy Lucy's are amazing; and the fries are hot, the beer cold, the atmosphere is loud, eclectic and local (that's part of the fun), and the prices can't be beat.
If you can't deal with an old-fashioned bar, a staff who work flat-out and have little time to coddle you, stay at home. But if you crave a great burger - head to Matt's!
- Pros: Great Burgers - Cheap!
- Cons: Depends on your attitude and perspective
Is the great food really worth your health?
by MattsICK
Today was my first experience in Matts. I was excited to have my first Jucy Lucy. My friend and I had went there today and right away things didnt go so well. When we got there, there was no seating except for 2 bar stools at the bar. The waitress asked us what we needed and we told her we would wait until a table became available and sit at the bar stools. Finally after what seemed like forever, a table became available. To my surprise the waitress who we ordered our food through sat the people that just walked in at the table. I asked the waitress why we had not been seated there. She then told me that since we were sitting at the bar, we will have to wait until there is no line to get seated at a table. So we had to eat at the bar.
After being brushed off by the RUDE waitress, there was more yet to come. My friend and I noticed that they do not use gloves at this establishment. I mean i guess that would be okay if the wait staff washed their hands before handling the food with their bare hands, but this is not the case. We witnessed (since we were sitting right at the bar by the grill) the bartender go straight from handling money and running the register to picking up a burger with her bare hands, REPEATEDLY!!! THEN, to our astonishment, two of the burgers must have requested no onions because she then took the buns off two of them and brushed off the onions with her still unwashed filthy fingers and put the burgers back together and send the food to the table. Then after my friend and I finally recieved our Jucy Lucy's, we didnt receive our french fries. We asked the crabby bartender about our fries and she then threw a basket of fries on the bar in front of us and walked away.
I do have to admit, those burgers were good, but is it really worth our health??
Disgusted...
- Pros: Good Food
- Cons: Crabby wait staff, unsanitary
HORRIBLE SERVICE***GREAT FOOD
by LCK82
HORRIBLE HORRIBLE HORRIBLE service I mean Soooooooooo RUDE we wanted to leave! We sat @ the bar observing: They DO NOT wear gloves the bartender cashiers then wraps up the food, back and forth NOT washing her hands in between. The cook also does not wear gloves or wash his hand after he wipes the sweat from his fore head w/his arm....So these people ordered burgers w/no onions well the cook put onions on them and the bartender took it upon herself to wipe off the onions w/her bare hands and put the burgers on new buns....{right before that she was digging in her purse} SHE DID NOT WASH HER HANDS!!!!!!!! the entire time.......Not to mention their attitudes are are insanely horrible!!!!!!!!! The juicy lucy's are SOooooooooooooooo GOOD! 5 stars for the food! but seriously someone needs to call the health inspector on these people.
best place to take people from out of town who want to go somewhere unique to minneapolis
by fatfoodguy
Matt's is the best, it is Minneapolis. The jucy lucy at Matt's is the best ever. The oozing motlen cheese core and the onions cooked to perfection make this the best bargain in the city. One order of fries is definitely enough for 2 or 3 people to share. You can leave here splitting a pitcher, an order a fries, and your own burger for aorund 15 with tip. This is a stereotypical dive bar, but mostly a dive bar for food, so you could bring kids here. There is no ice, no plates, and not much on the menu and thats what makes it the best. Street parking is a little unfortunate but not to hard to come by. I have never been to Matt's and been disappointed with my food. Everyone should experience matt's at least once in their life.
- Pros: a minneapolis staple, great dive bar atmosphere, consistantly great food
- Cons: street parking
Yum Yum Yummy Yum Yum!!!!

I cannot believe the "not so great" reviews of Matt's on here....ya all need to go back for a second run because you were either there on an off night of you just plain expected too much.
Matt's is an institution with their Juicy rated AAA! They don't claim to be anything but a groovy & cool dive bar for customers who "get it". The prices are wonderful, they are a real grill with a real grill keeper and haven't needed to cave in to the expectations of some who think you need a plate or cup of ice....you don't. Just sit back, chill out and fill your belly's.
One more thing....leave your "high horse" at home and get a clue as to what truly makes a bar unique.....or just go to any of the chains where your type sits and complains about unimportant things.
- Pros: Super cool place...awesome burgers...cheap beer
- Cons: none...
Very over rated

Far better burgers and fries elsewhere in better locations. I think this place is bunk. Yes, it's tasty but it truly is NOT worth the hype.
- Cons: location, overly hyped!
