A great place for late-night food

by bobberdobber

If it's late and you're hungry, the Falafel King is a pretty good choice. The food is prepared quickly and the portions are ample. I always get the Falafel sandwich, and it's a good one. The falafels seem to be hand-made (as opposed to the horrible squeezed-from-a-bag kind that are becoming increasingly and disappointly common) and they have a nice flavor. The sandwiches are never quite the same twice--the cooks seem to like to sort of "wing it" when it comes to ingredients. Sometimes my wife and I will both get one and each one is prepared slightly differently (different toppings, sometimes even different sauce). Fine with me. Variety is the spice of life and all that. They also have the usual gyros, shawirma, etc., which I've never tried because I'm a vegetarian. The pickles are definitely worth checking out if you're into some interesting (and sometimes downright weird) flavors. I particularly like the yellow ones with the lines on them (sort of look like large yellow okra, although I have no idea what they actually are).

The only downside to the restaurant is cleanliness. I've seen them sometimes prepare food after handling money without washing their hands first, and once I saw the dishwasher come out of the back room, wipe his hands on his pants, and prepare a sandwich for a customer. I guess you could do worse in a third-world country, but you could probably do better in America.

  • Pros: Good, fast and cheap.
  • Cons: The cooks need to learn to wash their hands every time they make a sandwich.

Mideast meets Midwest with very savory results.

In Short
Don't be deterred by the motel-room decor and dishes with such names as foul madamas (an egg-and-fava-bean breakfast dish). The menu covers basic Mediterranean dishes such as gyros, grilled skewer of lamb, Greek omelets, kebabs and, of course, falafel (deep-fried chickpeas shaped into croquettes). The daily specials are popular choices and include a small Greek salad and pita with lamb shank (Mondays), moussaka (Wednesdays) or seafood pasta (Fridays).

The best falafel in town!

by lgordon

Falafel King is the best for falafel in Minneapolis. The falafel itself is a perfect blend and you can count on it being hot and fresh! You can even get it spicy with a hot pepper relish. The hummus is also excelent with their pita bread and they garnish it with greek olives and hot yellow peppers. Falafel King deserves five stars!

  • Pros: Inexpensive, fresh, vegetarian selection
  • Cons: Skywy has no seeting, parking on the street
