We went to the Lyndale location over the weekend for the first time. The service was great. Even though it was packed in there, our server was on the ball with the coffee, juice, food, and the jokes. Even the bus-boys were on it....no need to wait for any refills.

Food was quick and really tasty. Even though I live on the other side of the city, I want to try the "Big Egg" now in St. Paul.

The breakfast here is pretty much standard fare, they offer nothing special in terms of dishes or quality. The service is good, the waiters are friendly. The food is a good deal.

Great atmosphere, food always prepared really well, I have never been disappointed with any breakfast item on their menu. The waitresses take alot of pride in doing things "right". For a great breakfast experience, go to the "EGG and I".

  • Pros: Great food, nice size servings.
  • Cons: Sometimes get a little busy.

In Short
Don't expect anything fancy--just a classic American breakfast done really well. The setting is equally simple: A scattering of local art and heaps of newspapers to pore over while you eat. The breakfast menu offers every imaginable combination of every breakfast staple, all cooked to golden brown in a glory of butter. The choices are endless: Wheat or white? Scrambled or fried? Bacon or sausage? Pancake varieties include buttermilk, sourdough, buckwheat and multigrain.

While the Egg & I offers a decent breakfast selection, they can't seem to fix their poor service. Over the years I've become used to having to get my own silverware, or sweetener, or highchair. Today my wife had to walk across the restaurant to pour herself a fresh cup of coffee, all the while our waitress sat and gabbed with her coworkers. We must have waited for 10 minutes with an empty cup (and they're glass cups).

The issues doesn't seem to be lack of staff, they always seem to have plenty. Our server today only appeared to have two tables. Today I had enough, and left my first $0.01 tip of my lifetime. Needless to say, I won't be going back.

  • Pros: Decent Food
  • Cons: Pathetic Service - Are they actresses just doing this to make ends meet

Great Breakfast, Efficient service, and our waitress had a little sass to her that we like, unlike the waitrons of other places. We look forward to breakfast here every chance we get. The seat yourself thing is kind of iffy but the staff have it worked out pretty well. Brilliant!

  • Pros: Great Food, great Staff, great system
  • Cons:  seat yourself

I have visited The Egg and I a few times and have always left disappointed. Compared to other breakfast places in Minneapolis, the portions are small, over-priced, and not particularly well prepared. On my last visit, I was conservative and just went with a standard bacon/eggs/hashbrowns plate. The hashbrowns were soggy, the bacon tasted a bit off and looked to be nothing more than the cheapest brand from the grocery store. For 7.95, not a bargain, either.

If this were the only choice in Uptown, it might be passable, but there are several others that are far better. I would not recommend the Egg and I.

  • Pros: Good Service
  • Cons: Below average food, Over-priced, Smaller portions

As an out of town guest, finding a good breakfast is of the utmost importance to me. The Egg & I hooked me up famously with a nicely-prepared breakfast of generous portions. The coffee was good and the waitress took the time to shine her pretty face on us. Can't say a bad thing about this place.

I love that place for great food and atmosphere. Granted you'll never know who your server is (they all help each other and are very efficient) but thet's not the point. No would you like an appie with your bevie and no rudeness either, staff is doing their job and doing it well. Very friendly, casual, fun and affordable place (that also means it's often packed). Their egg benedict is to die for.

PROS: great food

CONS: closes early

I like going to this restaurant not just 'cos it's nearby but because of the supremely casual atmosphere of the place. You can show up dressed in what you might wear in your own living room, and the staff are dressed like they went to a local punk show. This might be off-putting to some people, but I value the bracing honesty and unpretentiousness. When I come here, there isn't a gauntlet of social conventions to fulfill: I just sit down, order my food, eat it, pay and leave. I love that. The staff are courteous and efficient, but you get the sense that they don't take any crap from anyone, either, so I guess the one point of etiquette one must follow is a good idea in any situation: don't be an ass. The food is great, they accommodate vegetarians, the prices are cheap. I've been here several times alone and with friends and always come away with a good feeling about it.

PROS: Casual dining atmosphere, cheap prices, filling meals.
