Go for the books but stay for the animals! If you have kids, you must make a stop at Wild Rumpus. This is a great lazy afternoon kind of place. Visit the cats, chickens, birds and mice and you won't want to go home. Don't forget to make a stop in the bathroom and turn of the light to see the fish tank behind the mirror!
If Maurice Sendak owned a bookstore, it would look a lot like this charming, kid-centric menagerie.

Kids know to enter through the purple inset door that's just their size, while adults fumble--and then are startled by a scolding from the rooster in the front window. Caged birds squawk and coo, at least two cats compete for customers' attention and a grape arbor looks lifted from the pages of "Where the Wild Things Are." There's a wall of picture books; sections on nature, world religions, creative activities and fine arts; even parenting books for moms and dads.
