So I just read some of the reviews and I strongly disagree. I've been going here for years and I love the place! The chicken flautas are amazing and I love the chips and salsa, it's the only salsa in minneapolis without cilantro! Yes the prices have gone up but prices have gone up everywhere, no it's not authentic but hello, it's TEX-MEX!! People need to raise prices to stay in business and if you like a business you should support that. I love the food and the peach margaritas are yummy. I love it!!
Pros: yummy food, great salsa
Cons: none

The food was disgusting--my refried beans tasted like overly salty baked beans from a can. Watch out for the waitstaff--their helpful questions (would you like sour cream with that? would you like your burrito enchilada style) are just attempts to make the bill higher. They charge you extra for every little thing, definitely not what I call good service.

Pepito's has a few good things going for it - it's family owned, located in a neat part of Minneapolis and it has a fun atmosphere. I can't say many good things about the food - we've met there for several on several occasions with our group of friends and nobody has ever been particularly impressed by the food. However the chips and salsa were pretty good. Service has been unpredictable - sometimes they're helpful and funny - one server even advised me to stay away from the chicken mole which I planned to order (which I didn't!). Overall I think it's a fun place to go with a group and has a fun, busy atmosphere. However, if you're on a mission for good Mexican, Tex-Mex, Minnemex (or whatever you want to call it) - Pepito's is only about average.
Pros: Fun atmosphere
Cons: Food is about average at best

Simply put, you shouldn't serve bbq sauce on fajitas or offer pasta salad as a side to go with it. If you've ever been to a real, family style Mexican restaurant, you'll be shocked at how bad this place is. This restaurant would be out of business within a week in most other cities.
Pros: guacamole
Cons: everything else

Overall I think this a great place to go out and have a good Tex-Mex meal. The food is really quite good and they've large portions. I love the atmosphere with outside dining, cozy indoor seating, live music on some days and free valet parking. The service we've had has always been good. The first set of chips and salsa is free, but yes you have to pay if you want extra portions. The only drawback I noticed were the drinks are very pricey. Expensive, with one regualr size glass of Dos Equis costing more than I can purchase an entire 6 pack at the store.

Honestly, I really can't figure out why people love this place. It's always ALWAYS packed. The food is nowhere near authentic or even particularly good. It ridiculously expensive, and every time I go there, it gets MORE expensive. Instead of printing up new menus they just put little pieces of tape over the prices so they can continue to raise them occasionally with minimal effort on their part. They've even started charging for chips and salsa! What kind of a mexican restaurant charges you for chips and salsa? The only thing they have going for them is that they have the only full bar in the neighborhood. The prices at the bar are generally pretty ludicrous except during happy hour (3-6 on weekdays) when you can get a mediocre margarita for $3.75. Would somebody please tell me why this place is so popular?
Pros: Only bar with liqour in this crazy neighborhood
Cons: Packed, expensive, food is crummy, service stinks

I was at Pepito's last week and they have changed the chip/salsa policy. Your first basket is free and additional are $0.75. Not my favorite policy, but not that big a deal. The last reviewer stated there's a charge for valet - it's actually free but can be slow to retrieve your car depending on the night. If you call when you're on your way to the restaurant they'll put your name on the list so it's a shorter wait once you arrive. Don't miss out trying different things on their menu - the Mexican Pizza and stuffed pepper are both awesome and things you wouldn't necessarily try.

As of March 06, you have to ask for chips with salsa and it cost 75¢ per basket. Paying for them is sorta lame. Otherwise, the food is good and comparable with other Mex restaurants such as La Cintia's on 61st Nicollet and Chevy's. The place is a little older feel to it and not always the cleanest, but that's part of the ambiance of it I guess. Service always been very good. Expect to pay about $10+ per person. Parking is lacking and may have to walk a block or two to car. They have "Valet" in the evening for a charge and clogs up Chicago Ave at times. Go about 5 blocks north and the area starts to go downhill and not so safe... The bar attached to the restaurant is dumpy though and needs some flair to make it worth staying...
Pros: Good food, Service, atmoshere
Cons: Uncomfortable seats, Lack of parking, Location

Out of all the mexican restaurants that I have been to in town, Pepito's is my favorite! I usually get the same thing; which I am blanking on right now. Salsas and sauces are great! Free tortilla chips could use some work. Maybe try some homemade ones! Oh yeah, just say no to the fast food verson of Pepito's.
