Mpls's best Afghan Cuisine - Lamb and fantastic service!
by EatAroundTheWorld
OK first, I do have to admit that it was difficult to find the place...but WOW... it is definitely worth it!! The owner of the restaurant greeted our party of 4 as we walked in; we knew right away that it was a small quality family restaurant with very proud owners. The service was exceptional; the server explained the specialty items, the popular dishes, and highly recommended the lamb chops, which he said come directly from Rogers Farm in Hutchinson! A friend in our party and I consider ourselves lamb experts and were tempted but not sure of the lamb chops. But we trusted the waiter, and I am so glad we did! That night, both of us had the moistest, tenderest, and perfectly seasoned lamb chops with fine basmati rice, tomato based korma sauce, and some fresh vegetables? Afghan cuisine definitely won me over, it was the perfect choice. Overall I highly recommend the Da Afghan, we had never heard of it, but I will definitely be going back!
- Pros: Food, Service, Afghan Waiter, Hospitality, Afghan Decor on the Walls
- Cons: Location - just mapquest it and you'll be fine!
Total Rip OFF
by Myopinion16
The food is delicious, but the prices are way too high... $100 for 3 guys, I think is a total ripoff, we had a lamb karee, chicken karee and Egg plant curry with a bottle of wine ($20) , there are better restaurants than this one with more quality food and reasonable prices, The waiter added gratuity for 3 people, which is very unfair, I think there should be atleast 5 people on the table to add gratuity, but for 3 it just BS. I'd never recommend this restaurant .......
- Pros: Food
- Cons: High Prices, Location, Gratuity for 3 people
Please try it

Perhaps I have eaten out too often in the past 25 years but tonight I said, this is a memorable meal. My husband ordered the beef tenderloin kabob, I had the kofta. I can't wait for the leftovers, even the rice was amazingly good with almonds and raisins. The wine list was simple but inexpensive. The service was personable and efficient. All Bloomington Knights of Columbus and spouses should try it (walking distance).
Food and Service is Exceptional

Family owned and operated and it shows! You truly feel like you are eating dinner in a close family friend's home. The servers made great recommendations of food to try and delivered great service. This restaurant delivers a value that you won't find many other places; an abundance of delectable homemade food awaits you at a reasonable price!
- Pros: Lunch buffet, service, food, ambience
- Cons: None
Simple Afghan restaurant known for heavy portions of authentic grub.

In Short
Exotic music plays softly in the background. Each table is covered by a small Afghan rug. The menu has the highs and lows of an Afghan mountain range. For appetizers, there's boulanee and hummus . Besides lamb (curried, charbroiled chops, sauteed with tomato and onion, kebabs, shank and so on), the menu offers gyros, Afghan filet mignon, pasta shells and a vegetable platter. Da Afghan also serves nightly specials.
everything about this place is average

i found my food rather flavourless...my companions liked their lamb...so that evens out. the server was trying to be funny by being rude...that evens out..
place is tough to find, but they give good directions, so call them...
not too expensive, but definitely not an economical place either..
i probably will not be going back there again.
- Pros: lots of choice
- Cons: low flavour
Just had their food
by khalidjsheikh007
Me and my wife just visited their place. We had no trouble finding this place. Seems like they had heard about the complaints added a few signs and they were really helpful. Both me and my wife found their food to be below average. Both of us had afghani food before and we were expecting a similar experience. I ordered a chicken dish and it turned out too be too soupy, plus the potato was raw. My wife's orderd lamb tikkah kebab and we found her kebab to be too chewy for our taste. The service was very good though, but the food was below par and we even got charged for the bread.
- Pros: service, bread, ambiance
- Cons: food, location
Bad experience

Ate at (the?) Da Afgan last night. Had not been there in years. Remembered it as being quite unique and good. The place has declined to the point of no return. Decor was shabby. Food was just as shabby (rubbery pasta, tough lamb stew, muted flavors). The pride in making a fine meal has apparently vaporized. Maybe an off night? Tough, this is never an excuse.
fantastic meat

For a year or so, the owners of Da Afghan ran an "Express" version of their restaurant in Dinkytown; we were heartbroken when it closed in early 2002. But we finally made the trek down to the "main" restaurant in Bloomington, and the food was even better there. The prices are a little steep, though; even with a Happenings coupon and no drinks, the final damage (for two) was over $30.
- Pros: Excellent food, Unique, Friendly
- Cons: Strange location, A little expensive
